Indeed he used to be a dreadful phreaker (hacking phone lines, radio and satellite), a hacking prodigy, a genuine legend. The most astonishing part is that one of the charges against him is a picture taken by his friend as a souvenir, whiles he was breaking in a phone center from the Pacific Bell. Amazing…
Just before seeing the judge, Kevin Poulsen flew away and remained out of reach from the police for 17 months.
While getting away, he performed his most well-known hacking. He came out as the 102nd caller, and won a Porsche when phreaking the telephone terminals of Los Angeles radio station

• Used Pacific Bell's phone lines for his personal use
• Broke in a Pentagon computer through the Southern California University network

Kevin David Mitnick may be the most famous hacker in history. The movie “Takedown” was based on his hectic adventure with the FBI.
Many details of his life remain unsolved. Indeed, we still don't know why the government kept going at him (some say a 5-year prison sentence is a lot for what he actually did).
After spying on Pacific Bell voice mail system, he got chased by the police for 2 years and a half. During his getaway he proved to be unstoppable, which turned the police quite ridiculous. Actually, federal agents were convinced he was spying on their phoning, since he always escaped just before they could catch him !
Eventually, he got captured in 1995, by former Japanese hacker Tsutomu Shimomura.

According to the United States, he is responsible for “the greatest computer hacking of all times”, with casualties of 700 000 USD.
Gary McKinnon is British and struggles against his extradition to the USA. Indeed, he could receive a 70-year prison sentence if he were founded guilty.
French magazine Le Figaro described his sorry plight : he is a man who “ no longer washes, lives wearing a dressing gown in his flat, fired from his work and left by his girlfriend ”. He spends nights and days in his North-London room, hacking military US computers so as to find some information concealed from civilians.
